The Greater Perth region covers more than 6,400 square kilometres, with a population density of nearly 360 people per square kilometre. Governed across multiple state and federal electorates, the city maintains economic significance through its links to mining, energy, exports, tourism, and education.

Despite its distance from other major Australian cities—over 2,600 km from Adelaide and more than 3,800 km from Sydney—Perth continues to expand and strengthen its role as Western Australia’s leading urban, economic, and cultural centre.

Although the settlement began as a free colony, the growing need for labour led to the arrival of transported convicts in 1850. These workers contributed to vital public infrastructure and construction projects that helped shape the early city. In 1856, Queen Victoria formally proclaimed Perth as a city, marking a significant milestone in its colonial development.

The late 19th century brought rapid expansion as Western Australia experienced a series of gold rushes that attracted thousands of people seeking new opportunities. This growth continued through the 20th century, particularly after World War II, when a major influx of migrants—primarily from the British Isles and Southern Europe—boosted the population and transformed the cultural landscape.

More recent decades have seen a shifting demographic, with increasing migration from various parts of Asia contributing to a diverse and evolving community. Perth’s economic trajectory has been strongly influenced by Western Australia’s mining sector, and several mining booms in the late 20th and early 21st centuries cemented the city’s role as a regional headquarters for major resource operations.

By 1984, Perth’s sustained growth allowed it to surpass Adelaide and become Australia’s fourth-most populated city. Today, it remains a key administrative, economic, and cultural hub, shaped by its rich Indigenous heritage, colonial foundations, and ongoing global connections.

Perth, one of the world’s most liveable cities, has achieved recognition as a Beta global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network in 2020. As of 2021, the metropolitan area comprises 30 local government areas and more than 350 suburbs, stretching approximately 125 kilometres from Two Rocks in the north to Singleton in the south, and 45 kilometres from the Indian Ocean coast to Sawyers Valley in the east.

Beyond its central business district, Perth includes major urban centres such as Armadale, Fremantle, Joondalup, Midland, and Rockingham. These areas were originally independent settlements and have retained distinct identities even after merging into the broader metropolitan region. Mandurah, the state’s second-largest city, forms a coastal conurbation with Perth but is generally recognized as an independent city.

Perth is celebrated for its abundant parklands and natural reserves, with Kings Park and Botanic Garden being the most-visited and ranking among the world’s largest inner-city parks. Other popular natural attractions include Cottesloe Beach and the nearby Rottnest Island. The city also preserves significant cultural and heritage sites, such as the Perth Mint, WA Museum Boola Bardip, and the World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison.

Perth serves as an educational hub, hosting all five of Western Australia’s universities, and supports commerce and trade through Fremantle Harbour and Perth Airport, connecting the city to global markets. With its blend of liveable urban spaces, cultural heritage, and natural beauty, Perth continues to attract residents, visitors, and investors alike, maintaining its status as a leading metropolitan centre in Australia.

Alongside its colonial heritage, the city is acknowledged by its Noongar name, Boorloo, which traditionally refers to the central business district, the local government area, or Perth more generally. First recorded by Robert Menli Lyon in 1833 as Boorlo, the term was initially interpreted to reference “Perth, properly Point Fraser.” Lyon also noted the name Byerbrup for the highland running through the town. Later studies suggested that Boorloo, or its variant bilya, may simply mean “river” in the Noongar language, while other interpretations associate the term with “big swamp,” referencing the chain of lakes around the central business district and Northbridge.

In 2024, Western Australian government officials emphasized the importance of Noongar heritage in public infrastructure. Premier Roger Cook, along with ministers Rita Saffioti and John Carey, referred to Boorloo while inaugurating the Boorloo Bridge, acknowledging the Indigenous name for Perth. Earlier in the year, the government explained that Boorloo Bidee Mia, meaning “Perth pathway to housing” in the Whadjuk Noongar language, reflects efforts to honor and incorporate Noongar language and culture in contemporary city planning.

Perth’s recognition of both its colonial and Indigenous heritage underscores a growing commitment to preserving historical identity while celebrating the city’s rich and diverse cultural landscape.

At the time of British settlement, the central business district of modern Perth was within the territory of the Mooro clan, led by Yellagonga. The Mooro were part of the Whadjuk, whose communities were organized along the Swan River. Collectively, the Whadjuk and other Noongar clans form a socio-linguistic group that has maintained cultural continuity across the region for millennia.

The legal recognition of Noongar connection to the land has progressed in recent decades. In 2006, the Federal Court of Australia ruled in Bennell v State of Western Australia that Noongar native title persisted over the Perth metropolitan area. Following appeals, a landmark South West Native Title Settlement was negotiated, including the Whadjuk Indigenous Land Use Agreement. Finalized by the Federal Court on 1 December 2021, this settlement acknowledges the enduring rights and traditional ownership of the Noongar people.

Complementing this legal recognition, the Noongar (Koorah, Nitja, Boordahwan) (Past, Present, Future) Recognition Act 2016 formally recognizes the Noongar as the traditional custodians of south-western Western Australia. Today, Perth not only reflects its colonial and modern urban development but also honors its deep Indigenous heritage, fostering a city that acknowledges both history and culture.

The establishment of European presence in Western Australia began in earnest with the Swan River Colony in 1829, following prior settlements at King George’s Sound (Frederick Town, later Albany) in 1826. On 4 June 1829, British colonists, led by Captain James Stirling aboard the Parmelia, first set eyes on the mainland, impressed by its natural beauty. The town’s formal founding was commemorated on 12 August 1829 when Helen Dance, wife of the captain of the second ship Sulphur, felled a tree to mark the occasion.

The arrival and expansion of European settlers led to escalating tensions with the Noongar people, particularly the Whadjuk clan. Conflicting views on land use and ownership sparked violent confrontations, including the execution of Whadjuk elder Midgegooroo, the killing of his son Yagan in 1833, and the Pinjarra massacre in 1834. European agricultural development restricted the traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle of the Noongar, forcing them to occupy designated areas such as Third Swamp, known as Boodjamooling, which later also became a campsite for travellers and miners during the 1890s gold rush.

Perth’s European exploration and the founding of the Swan River Colony remain a pivotal chapter in the city’s history, reflecting both the opportunities of settlement and the profound consequences for its Indigenous inhabitants.

After World War II, Perth had a population of roughly 280,000 and an economy that had stagnated since the 1920s. State governments implemented a program of post-war economic development led by public works planners such as Russell Dumas. Key projects included the expansion of the Mundaring and Wellington dams, development of Perth Airport, and establishment of an industrial zone at Kwinana. Economic growth was further fueled by post-war immigration and foreign investment, including the Anglo-Iranian Oil Refinery constructed in the early 1950s.

The city’s urban design shifted in the 1950s, guided by the Stephenson-Hepburn Report, which encouraged development along highway networks and the gradual closure of tram systems. Perth’s mining-pastoral boom in the 1960s accelerated population growth and urban expansion. In 1962, the city earned international attention as residents illuminated their homes to celebrate astronaut John Glenn’s orbit, earning the nickname “City of Light,” a tradition repeated in 1998 for the Space Shuttle.

Perth’s prosperity is closely tied to its role as the service center for Western Australia’s vast resource sector, including gold, iron ore, nickel, and natural gas. Recent urban redevelopment, including the Perth City Link project, has transformed the area by sinking a section of the railway line, allowing seamless pedestrian access between Northbridge and the CBD. The Perth Arena, a hub for sports and entertainment, has received multiple architectural accolades from the Design Institute of Australia, the Australian Institute of Architects, and Colorbond. St Georges Terrace remains the city’s commercial spine, while Hay Street and Murray Street host the majority of retail and entertainment venues. Central Park, the tallest building in Perth, exemplifies the city’s post-mining-boom skyline, alongside developments like Brookfield Place.

The Perth metropolitan area stretches approximately 125 kilometres from Two Rocks in the north to Singleton in the south, and around 50 kilometres from the coast to Mundaring in the east, covering 6,418 square kilometres. With an urban footprint of 1,722 square kilometres, Perth ranks among the world’s 70 largest urban areas and is noted for its relatively low population density. The metropolitan region includes 30 local government areas, incorporating suburban and coastal communities as well as Rottnest and Garden Islands. Greater Perth, in broader statistical terms, also includes the City of Mandurah and parts of the Shire of Murray.

Geologically, Perth sits on the Swan Coastal Plain, a flat, sandy area flanked by the Darling Scarp and the Indian Ocean. Its major waterways, the Swan and Canning Rivers, are central to the city’s identity, with Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) named for its native black swans. Colonial-era development occurred largely on the Perth Wetlands, a chain of freshwater wetlands running east to west. To the east, the Darling Scarp forms a low escarpment, while surrounding areas include the Perth-Gingin Shrublands, Banksia Woodlands, and other ecologically significant landscapes, which continue to shape Perth’s metropolitan and natural character.

Perth, Western Australia’s capital, is renowned for its sun-drenched climate and seasonal rainfall patterns. Classified as a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa), the city experiences hot, dry summers from December to March, with February being the hottest month. Average daily sunshine reaches 8.8 hours, translating to around 3,200 hours annually and 138.7 clear days, earning Perth the title of Australia’s sunniest capital.

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 35 °C (95 °F) on approximately 26 days each year, with temperatures surpassing 40 °C (104 °F) on roughly five days. The highest recorded temperature in Perth reached 46.2 °C (115.2 °F) in February 1991. Despite the heat, summer afternoons often benefit from the "Fremantle Doctor," a cool south-west sea breeze that alleviates high north-easterly temperatures. Rainfall during summer is sporadic and can include thunderstorms, weak cold fronts, or remnants of tropical cyclones from the north-west.

Winters in Perth are relatively mild and wet, with most rainfall occurring between May and September. Minimum temperatures occasionally drop below 5 °C (41 °F), with the lowest recorded temperature in the metropolitan area reaching −3.4 °C (25.9 °F). Frost may form on rare occasions, and while snow has never been recorded in the CBD, light snowfalls have occurred in the outer Perth Hills, including Kalamunda, Roleystone, and Mundaring, most recently in 1968.

Since the mid-1970s, Perth has experienced changes in rainfall patterns, including reduced winter rainfall and increased extreme summer events. Notable examples include slow-moving storms in February 1992, heavy rainfall from a tropical low in February 2017, and the remnants of ex-Tropical Cyclone Joyce in January 2018. Severe thunderstorms, such as the one on 22 March 2010, have also caused significant damage due to large hail and heavy precipitation.
